Climbing the Wall... a memory from a longtime friend!!

"I have known Joan and her family since 1944. There were four of us at Calder High School in Liverpool, fast friends, Joan myself, Brenda, and Diana, and we have shared many activities and kept in touch to this day. One particular activity I will share with you. When Joan was at Girton College, Cambridge in the 1950's, I was at Queen Elizabeth College in London, and we used to visit each other. Joan and I would go to a show in London, in those days theatre tickets were 1/6 (about a quarter today) in the "Gods " section in the upper balcony! and I would go up to,Cambridge and we would go to a dance. So one weekend I took the train up to Girton to stay with Joan, I had to pass myself off as a student in the dorm. Lined up to,get my meals etc., no problem!! Joan took the mattress off the bed, I was on the floor and she slept on the spring.....On the Saturday night we went to a dance at the Unitarin Church Hall and caught the bus back to Girton. Unfortunately it ran late, so, when we arrived at the entrance to the grounds the large wrought iron gates were locked, oops!! Surrounding the campus was a stone wall 5 - 6 feet high. what to do?? We tossed our dance shoes (in a special bag) and hitched up our dresses, we wore ballerina length taffeta dance dresses - not the ideal thing for climbing walls, but we both got over. The next step was to,get into the dorm, Joan had arranged for one of her friends to look out for us and come down to open the front door. So we slunk around to the flower beds on the side of the building, I tripped over a heating vent with a loud clang, (it was a dark November evening),the light went on at one of the Dean's windows....We flattened ourselves against the wall and waited, fortunately nothing happened. Then we had to throw pebbles at the second floor window of Joan's friend to alert her. That done successfully and she came down and let us in, and we heaved a sigh of relief!! I will always treasure the friendship between our families and friends, and have many happy memories lasting for over seventy years." Cynthia Durham
