JEMJI... a group of friends who spanned over 60 years and many continents...
Created by the McGrath family 10 years ago
This is taken from a letter sent by one of the members of JEMJI:
"Joan had a huge talent for friendship – women and men, boys and girls, young and old from all over the world.
One of her great achievements was to found JEMJI. I speak for all five of us when I say that we had more fun and happiness with JEMJI than anything else at Cambridge and it has continued for 60 years.
What is JEMJI?
The “club” formed of five geographers at Girton College in 1950
J. Joan McGrath (née Kerr) from Canada
E. Elizabeth (Liz) Fennell (née Farleigh) from Switzerland –then various countries in Africa.
M. Mary Wade (née Mallinson) in Somerset, England : so she was the holder of the precious log book as the only one permanently in the UK.
J. Jessie Falconer (née Chidlow) in Canada
I Irene Dako (née) Robinson in Ghana.
Soon the original members were joined by co-opted members:
Gerald, Ron, John, George, F and George D - our husbands.
Later came associate members – the many children
Our first reunion was in Cambridge in April 1954. The last (twenty fifth) was in October 2010.
