Emigration to Canada #1

Created by the McGrath family 11 years ago
Never one to sit around and let the world pass by, my mother made a big decision in the late 1950s to go on an adventure to Canada with her dear school friend. She was engaged to my father at the time, however he was overseas and a wedding date hadn't been set. "I was off!" she would recount to us, as she described how the Great Canadian Emigration #1 adventure began. Along with her dear friend, she worked her way across Canada first in Montreal and then again in Calgary. Little did she imagine that she and my father would end up back in Canada, a number of years later with wee ones of her own, ready to start a new chapter of her life in Kingston, Ontario!! This letter is from her friend, who ended up meeting a young Canadian man out west and subsequently marrying him and settling in Canada. They have always stayed in touch over the years... "Joan made many friends as she went through life and I count myself lucky to have been one of them. One of the happiest times we spent together was when I visited you and Joan in Indonesia. That is a holiday I shall never forget- thank you both for that experience. Then, of course, our journey to Canada was an expedition that changed my life. In between these were our holidays in Kingston and others in Western Canada. Joan was a great traveller and a happy companion. I know how much she enjoyed travelling with your families. We are so lucky to have those memories to look back on. Please give my love to Euan, Kyla and Ilana and their spouses. It has been a great pleasure watching your children and grandchildren grow up and develop their own families. Our love to you all..."
