... where warmth and love have flowed...

Recollections from Euan's great childhood friend... " Mrs McGrath had many gifts. Her vibrant artistic talent and vivacious temperament were among her many attributes which were well known and well-loved. Her essence permeated throughout our community. Though I didn't choose the path of a visual artist, the expression has a life force to be enjoyed. And on reflection, I've found that Mrs. McGrath's influence shaped me in a number of surprising ways. One of many memories is a bird mosaic made from broken glass that is at this present moment beautifully framed and hanging on my living room wall. I had created it over March Break in 1973. The Schonenburg Gallery (do you remember it on King Street?) was having a youth exhibition and had made a call for submissions. My family went on a lot of vacations but that March, we were apparently hunkered down in Kingston. My mum encouraged us to submit a piece of art. There would be after all some enrichment over the March Break! I spent the better part of a day with a hammer and several glass objects in our basement, having some smashing good fun. I don't think my artwork entitled "Springtime Bird" was in the running for any major awards, but it did help train my creative eye and grow my imagination. I think from that definitive moment onward, for instance, I began to really notice Mrs McGrath's artwork and visual work, in general, a lot more. After all, I leveraged the idea for using broken glass as a medium from one of her unusual pieces on Bicknell Crescent. All of us have memories of places and relationships where warmth and love have flowed. And, oh, I almost forgot... Thanks Mrs. McGrath, or Joan Kerr, for bringing a wee bit of ye son, Euan Roderick McGrath, to me and the rest of us. (Longtime friend of Euan's)
