Celebration of Life memorial service...June 15, 2013... Joan Hughes' Tribute + video

Joan Hughes is one of my mum's earliest Kingston friends, and what I would laughingly call one of the "Scottish Mafia"!! Herein lies the text of her tribute: "Joan and I met in 1967 - at the Kingston Tennis Club. Joan and I never became tennis buddies - her style was a little too enthusiastic for me! Shortly afterwards Joan invited me to tea, and that was the beginning of our long-standing friendship. Joan's keen analytical mind made her a stimulating and challenging companion - and amusing too! As time went by our paths diverged, but we remain connected through our Scottish traditions … - evenings of Scottish Country Dancing - going with a group to the annual St. Andrew's Ball There were treasured memories, as we grew older and activities changed to more sedate ones! We enjoyed having lunch at Tom’s Place, a favourite restaurant of Joan, and also chatting over cups of tea. However one of Joan's greatest delights never changed. She visited Scotland often; to be with her mother in Kingussie, her brother in Aberdeen, as well as other friends and relatives; scattered around the UK. Joan would have been familiar with the sight of sheep grazing on the hillsides around Kingussie, perhaps even an occasional watchful shepherd would be seen. Shepherds and their flocks were common sights on the hillsides of Palestine, and it is interesting to note that many of the great ones in Israel's history, including David, had been shepherds in their youth. Psalm 23 is David's poetic expression of a Divine Shepherd. I read this now: The LORD is My Shepherd A Psalm of David 1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever."
