Deep, philosophical, celestial,soaring... These are all words that I would use to describe my mother. Together with my father, they provided the three of us with an amazing childhood, full of wonder, thought and joy. On the occasion of their wedding anniversary in 1976, we each received a plain white envelope, with the precise handwriting of my father and words from the both of them that sent us soaring onwards through life. I saved this letter in my top drawer, and had just uncovered it on this Easter trip home, thirty seven years later and just two weeks before the villainous return of her cancer. As I reread it, I look back and have confirmed that a very special lady touched our lives... Here are the words of wisdom, written on March 21, 1976: "Always, all of your life, remember this - your Daddy and Mummy are here to be your strength and your haven. we want you to be happy and live life to the full, alive to all the riches which surround you... Therefore, we wish for you the most precious gift, and one which will NEVER fail you, no matter what (apparent) disasters befall. This wish for you has grown out of distilled knowledge which has come to us from our experience of Life and the Love that surrounds us all as we live our lives within the hand of God/Goodness. This is our wish for you: "The Gift of the Eyes to See, with the Perception of the Soul... It is a gift precious beyond all material possessions. It will open your eyes to Beauty in Nature and hidden Beauty in People. See with the eyes of the soul, and nothing that the world can ever do to you will break you. You may not understand this fully now, but treasure these words and they will mean more and more to you as you grow up. This is our wish for you as you stand on the Threshold of Life. It comes with love undying and our deepest hope is that it will be with you when we cannot... Mummy and Daddy
