Memories from a Girton friend at Cambridge University...

"I think of Joan as one of my oldest friends. Along with Rene, Liz and Mary we spent many late evenings at Girton talking over the highlights of our busy days, advising each other on the handling of difficulties and celebrating successes. In 1952 Joan and I explored Western Europe when we hitchhiked through Holland, Switzerland and adjoining countries, often benefiting from Joan's genius for making and keeping friends. We stayed with Bep, Janni, Hans and their family in Holland, and the Stalder family in Basel, where Joan recovered from food poisoning - [she couldn't resist milk however suspect its source]. In Italy we once arrived too late for a Youth Hostel dinner, but despite no common language, Joan's love of tennis somehow charmed the manager of the hostel and resulted in an invitation to share her family's dinner. We explored Florence, Rome, Capri, Sorrento and Pompeii, including the Blue Grotto where I turned a nauseous green. We both indulged in citron pressé - most refreshing in the hot weather. In Canada I recall a brief visit to you both in Kingston and meeting the 4 or 5 year old Euan and his baby sister. I also recall a craft fair in Ottawa where I admired Joan's jewelry. She and I met twice at Girton reunions and once here in BC when you both visited us all too briefly. Christmas letters provided evidence of lots of world travel, which I envied. Your travels will now be sadder without Joan who so clearly reveled in the family reunions. I know you will feel your great loss acutely this year and, I hope, a little less severely in subsequent years, but your memories will provide some recompense. Thank you for the June 15th invitation.I shall be thinking of Joan on that date, and hoping that all of you will gain comfort from celebrating a full and happy life, well lived."
